SPOT: 25 years in service, 25 million images

27 06 2011 - April 2011: With SPOT-1 (1086) up to SPOT-5 (2002), SPOT's satellites family is 25 years in service and 25 million images.

With a current 2.5m resolution for SPOT-5, H. de Boissezon, in charge of CNES’s Image Analysis and Products department stresses that “No other satellite offers that combination of swath and resolution, which is a key advantage for close observation of vast territories.

SPOT 5 watches over Japan’s coastline after earthquake and tsunami

27 06 2011 - March 2011 : After the devastation of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, all eyes are on the nuclear power stations along the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan. SPOT 5 is covering the disaster-affected region.

14 03 2011 - On 21 February, a severe earthquake hit the city of Christchurch. Satellites quickly swung into action to cover the disaster for the International Charter on Space and Natural Disasters.

06 09 2010 - Just one month after the launch of TanDEM-X, which took place on 21 June 2010, DLR (German Aerospace Center)researchers have created the first digital elevation model over a group of Russian islands in the Arctic Ocean.

Pre-and post-disaster SPOT 5 imagery of flooding in Southeast France

29 06 2010 - Torrential rains flooded the east of the department of Var in Southeast France on 16 June. Spot Image presents a comparison of two SPOT 5 images of the disaster area: an archive image acquired 22 August 2009 and another acquired 18 June 2010, two days after the flash flood event.

Successful launch on June, 15th, 2010 of PICARD Satellite

15 06 2010 - Two satellites PICARD and PRISMA were successfully launched today by a russian Dniepr rocket from Yasni spatial base.

PICARD is an investigation dedicated to the simultaneous measurement of the absolute total and spectral solar irradiance, the diameter and solar shape, and to the Sun's interior probing by the helioseismology method. These measurements obtained all along the mission will allow to study their variations as a function of the solar activity.

Its objectives are to improve our knowledge of:

the functioning of our star through new observations,

the influence of the solar activity on the climate of the Earth.

Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Spot 5 mobilized

05 05 2010 - On April 20th, the oil platform Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, inducing a geyser of oil in 1 500 meters of depth causing the destruction of the marine environment and the pollution of hundreds of kilometers of coast.

On April 25th, platform and oil slick were observed by the satellite Spot 5.

Huge plume of volcanic ashes over Europe by MERIS

16 04 2010 - The eruption of Eyjafjöll volcano on April 14th in South Iceland has freed extremely abrasive volcanic ashes. Overlooking an ocean of clouds at the altitude of 11 000 meters the plume is progressing across Europe. MERIS instrument aboard ENVISAT Satellite was able to capture a 300 m resolution photography of the situation.

First Fly over the pole for SWARM Magnetometer

12 04 2010 - Jean Louis Etienne, the famous Pole Explorer, has succesfully achieved his fly over the Arctic on a hot-air-ballon and landed last Saturday, April 11th in Eastern Siberia. Mr Etienne was travelling along with an engineery model of the future SWARM Magnetometer developed by CNES Teams in Toulouse. This instrument was designed to experience the measurement of magnetic field variations over the North Pole.
